Dad and I were out looking at the car today, and we'd traced the problem back from the starter motor, back through the relays, so now we knew the problem laid somewhere between (and including) the ignition switch and the anti-theft unit. To fix this, we decided to put a direct link in between the battery and starter motor - a bit of a bodge, but a workable solution.
Whilst I was looking for a way to get the steering column casing off, I found a switch, a random switch tucked away that I hadn;t noticed before. What does one do when they find a switch? Flip it of course. This had the unfortunate effect of turning the starter motor over whilst my dad was poking round the engine, but proved something. Someone else has had this problem. Someone else had this problem, and fixed it in exactly the same way we were going to.
Because the problem appears to be between the ignition switch and ATU, all that is needed is for the power to be applied to the starter motor directly when this problem flares up. And it's already there. Superb :)
Bodge-tastic, to nick a phrase from Scrapheap Challenge.
(The accidental mechanic strikes again.)
