I was being clever. I wanted to try an RPM of kernel 2.6-pre something someone had made available on the SuSE site. I went through it and checked that it wouldn't do anything stupid, decided it was OK to run.
Then it did something stupid.
My vmlinuz and initrd were overwritten.
I didn't have another copy.
Should be easy enough to sort out, but no. Nothing I did would coax it into starting in anything but single user mode. Instead of screwing around too much, I just decided a reinstall was easiest. Kept /home (/dev/hda5) as it was, but everything else got rejigged - I was running out of space on /usr as it was. This gave me an excuse.
Advantage of keeping /home is that most of my personalisations have been kept nice and still active. A few needed doing again but almost everything was saved.
Less geeky subjects? Been chatting with Caroline tonight, has been much fun. Her client died unexpectedly though, and I am knackered. Instead of hanging round I said I would go to bed. No chance... somehow I still ended up here. Odd that. But it's true, I was going to go to bed when I got off the phone at 10:45pm! How did I end up here at 12:15am?
*sighs happily*
Only 3 more days of training, 3 more days of utter boredom and then back onto the phones. Then it's only 2 weeks until coffee. I truly and really and seriously can not wait.
