This is fantastic programming on BBC4, random journalist whose name I have no idea of, wandering about various "Stanese" countries with a camera.

Anyhow, geeky! I've set up mainpc running an SSH server on port 443 which is should then forward to a proxy on localhost, running on port 8080 (which has always been running there for traditional reasons), which should then allow me to browse the web with no restrictions, and will hopefully also allow me to SSH out from work! Maybe. Possibly :)

As I don't have windows running here right now, I'll have to check it works tomorrow (if I decide to do some o/t in the morning) or Wednesday. Hmm.

I have more pork cooked and cooling in the fridge. Uhhm.

Why do I bother writing here when life is this boring? :)

Lookie here. *gets excited*
OK, Bind 8 is now running as a simple caching nameserver, DNS requests go to mainpc first of all, then if mainpc can't answer they go to ns0.ivarch.com (or whatever it's IP is). I should probably ask [livejournal.com profile] ivarch if this is OK before I start doing anything serious with it :) It's just that his DNS servers are a hundred times better than NTL's, which pretty much died during the last worm outbreak.

Why am I doing this? Uhhm. Yeah. Good question. I got fed up of NTL's DNS servers and decided that it was probably nicer and quicker to use Bind as a cache, rather than hit ivarch.com every time I needed a lookup. Also it's been interesting learning to set it up.

Someday I may set up a wee domain for my internal network, just to play some more.

Oddly enough, I do seem to have developed one small problem. Postfix is refusing to accept mail unless I turn off DNS lookups, with an error "Domain of sender must resolve", when they plainly do (dig @mainpc livejournal.com MX gives a result). I've turned off DNS lookups for Postfix in the meantime, while I try to figure out what's up.

Weird.

Today I have been to the bank, taken my car to the garage and had lunch at the James Watt (hmmm, good burger). I haven't posted two amazon packages but they will get done tomorrow morning, I don't think I start until lateish.

I seem to have watsed an evening on geekery.
Oops.

I just couldn't sleep, so sat reading HPATOOTP some more. Until 4am. *coughs* It's got quite exciting towards the last hundred or so pages. Dumbledore doing a disappearing act, Hagrid smuggling weird and wonderful creatures, Umbridge going mental, and I particularly liked Fred and George Weasley's parting shot :)

Tonight, to make up for it, I shall be in bed early. Honest. I say this every now and then but never do it... tonight, I shall. Really.

More emails got sent away to agencies today. I'll probably end up calling them if they don't respond tomorrow. It bugs me that these people have email facilities but don't check them frequently and don't respond to them quickly. I waited a week for a response from one agency, for a simple question, too!

Email is a powerful tool - use it right and you've got a fantastic thing that can help you out no end. Misuse it and it becomes a minus point - why would I bother talking to that agency any more, considering email is my preferred method of communication? My current agency, the Greenock Estate Agency check theirs several times a day... and they do everything right, as far as I am concerned these guys are perfect :)

I started this post half an hour ago. Been busy listening to Little Axe. Oops.
