I've seen two films this weekend. And whilst I'm an awful reviewer, I am going to write briefly about Match Point and Jarhead.

I saw Match Point tonight. To start with the basics - it's a Woody Allen film, removed from his usual location of New York and transplanted to London. It's a story about luck. One of the taglines you might hear is "I Don't Care if He's Great, I Just Hope He's Lucky".

Spoilers, and not much else )

I also saw Jarhead yesterday. Now I only really wanted to see it because I love Jake Gyllenhaal, but I was completely sucked in by the film. It's ostensibly a film about war, but it's not really. There's very little actual war. We follow the story of Swoff (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his journey through operation desert shield/storm in the US Marines. It's a story of boredom and how to handle it, emotional breakdown, desperation for action and interaction between the marines in their "group" (I can't remember the proper name...squadron?!).

It was really well done, not tacky or over emotional, not like any other films that may try to cover similar ground that I have seen! Well worth watching.
