So you've gone to your local market, and you want to buy a new mobile phone. You go to a market trader, and you are thinking "is this phone genuine?". What do you do? Look at it and decide whether it's alright based on how cool it looks?
No - you type *#06# into the phone, and note down the IMEI (the number displayed). Then you dial 07956 125 820, and follow the prompts, entering the IMEI. This will tell you whether the phone has been blacklisted (reported lost/stolen) or not. Based on this, you can then make a decision on whether to buy the phone or not.
(It says it's the T-Mobile checker, but I'm sure that phones are blacklisted across networks these days.)
