I updated my spreadsheet today. I keep two seperate financial thingummies - I use GnuCash to keep track of how much money I have where, and a spreadsheet to try and figure out where most of the money goes to by splitting outgoings into:
  • Fixed liabilities (Loans and so on)
  • Variable liabilities (Credit cards and overdraught interest)
  • Fixed bills (Bills which remain the same every month)
  • Variable Bills / Utilities (Bills which vary)
  • Essentials (Food, petrol, household)
  • Cash (How much cash I withdraw)
It's surprisingly handy to see where the money is actually going to. For example last month (I mean Feb) i withdrew a couple of hundred pounds in cash - that figure is skewed slightly by Jane's birthday trip to Scotland though :) But if I keep it up to date, it means I can spot when my expenditure on an item is high. For example my cash spend in March is pretty good for me but my spend on food was ridiculous. Mainly down to me filling the freezer. I think. I can't see any other good reason for it, anyway.

Anyways there was a point to this. I was going to try and explain how shocked I was when I noticed my expenditure on Groceries doubled. Everything else seems OK apart from "Entertainment" which has been screwed up by putting the entrance and purchases at Erotica in that category. Well, where else do you put them? :) Considered "household"... *giggles*

I'm hungry, need breakfast. Finances are hard work! :)
