Swings from the highest peak of ecstasy (or thereabouts) right through to the troughs of despair. And things in between too. Including the monotony of indifference. (*Warning, may contain slight exaggeration)
To start off with, I'll start off with the lows. Work. Nothing has changed and nothing is new, but I didn't want to go in this morning. There was a gorgeous morning drive in, through quite thick fog and sunbeams shining through it at odd intervals to make an impressive sight in places. I didn't get to sleep until gone half one this morning, so wasn't feeling particularly hot.
I felt OK for the first few hours, then partway through I started getting the tell-tale signs of Phil falling apart a bit. REALLY thirsty, insatiable hunger, achey, and throat beginning to feel sore. It was a lovely quiet day for us, took maybe 30 calls all day long, so had nothing to complain about really. This was the mediocrity. We can't really do anything while it's quiet at work any more other than wait for calls.
I got a phone call from a mobile number, couldn't answer it as was online at the time, so listened to the voicemail later on from the landline. It was from someone at Orange resourcing. Apparently they wanted to talk to me about my application for the position of "Medium priority incident analyst" that I applied for! My heart leapt for joy, as why would they call me if it was bad news? They tend to do that by email (I have lots of experience of this). I called them back and was told that they wanted me to go for an interview! I could have kissed the person I spoke to.
The only difficulty, they could only offer me Thursday morning at 0930. Now you remember I ranted a few days ago about Jane and holidays? It just happened to be that Thurs the 21st was one of the days I'd booked off, and I hadn't got round to cancelling yet. Fantastic! But how does one get from Barnsley to Bristol for 0930, without getting up at 5am? I pondered this, but accepted the invitation anyhow, because you don't turn down an interview, thinking that I could deal with that issue as it came up.
As I sat thinking and poring over maps and train timetables, I got another phone call, this time the voicemail was from someone at T-Mobile's recruitment team, offering me an interview for the position of "Service Support Analyst" that I'd applied for! OMG! Oh, my!! They wanted to arrange an interview for the beginning/middle of next week in Hatfield. How utterly fantastically convenient.
If I didn't know better, I'd almost think someone was co-ordinating this for me :)
So, I have now arranged the following. Monday or Tuesday I travel to London and shack up with the parentals. Wednesday at 11am I arrive at Hatfield for an interview with T-Mobile. I travel back to London. Thursday (early morning) I travel to Bristol for an interview with Orange at 0930, then travel straight back to Barnsley.
The best thing about this, is that I can claim lots of mileage. Both will presumably pay for me to travel from Barnsley to the place of interview and back. So 320 miles (according to Google maps) from home to Hatfield and back, and 364mls from home to Orange's Bristol campus (684 miles in total). My actual journey will be: 177+50+114+181=522 miles. Assuming I don't get lost ;)
I was so excited, I went out to Meadowhall after work and bought a new suit. I've needed one for ages but didn't have an excuse. It was originally marked up at £140, reduced to £125. I took it to the till and it rang up at £105. I then applied and put it into a storecard which saved me another 10%! Total saving to Phil - £30 off marked price. And it's WAY nicer than the £99 suit I was looking at.
It's been a good day.
