- What job do you have, and why do you like/hate it?
I am a "Technical Support Engineer" for a manufacturer of CCTV equipment of various types. This involves talking to installers and salesmen who want info on our products and can't be arsed to look in the manuals and/or datasheets.
I loathe it and love it in equal measure. To me there is no greater pleasure than spending an age on a problem and resolving it, and having someone thank you. A thank you makes my day in so many ways. I loathe it because at times we're reduced to talking manuals. Churning out the same hackneyed phrases over and over again, to the same people! I dislike being asked to provide part numbers! Is it just me, or should customer services have the same level of knowledge of what products are on offer that a tech support team does? Part numbers aren't "tech"... - As a kid, what did you want to be when you "grew up?"
I never had a "When I grow up....." thing, or at least I don't think I did. The only career I ever imagined was one in computing, probably since I was about 13. - Is the job you have now anything like what you imagined as a kid?
In a roundabout fashion. The kit I work with is as technical as any computer, however I always envisaged myself working as a developer. I'm slowly working my way to the testing and project management side of things now. - Do you have a five-year career plan?
No. I have a vague 1-year plan. I want to be out of customer-facing in 12 months if I can help it. I want to be back-office, perhaps dealing with integration and new large-scale projects. - In order to get the job of your dreams, is there anything you wouldn't do? Why?
Not really. I wouldn't do anything "bad", if that counts for anything.
