Eeeek! That's one of my secret worries...that LJ will have a glitch which exposes all private entries.

You need to use the correct HTML for the character in your post to get it to work. This is & amp;

But what I want, is for the process to be invisible to the end user. I don't want to have the user need to know HTML escapes in order to be able to post this stuff...

Oh sorry I thought you meant using the standard one.

Why not parse the input first and if it hits a common non-alphanumeric character then convert the character to the relevant HTML?

Because I thought I was, but as shown in a post later on in that night, I found I was being an idiot, and not escaping the right string... oops.
