Installing VC++ and seeing it I can make more sense of it this time, with my nifty new book. It actually makes more sense this time, even just reading it. It explains that VC++ sets up a form (in VB speak) as a class, and these classes are derived from various MFCs.
This is helpful, yes - because nobody had explained it that way before. It never fails to astound me how some books quite literally throw you in the deep end and just assume that you will know silly little things, or at least not question them when you're told "do this, it works".
And VC++ Setup is now telling me it is going to reboot even though I told it not to. Fuckers. No - I'm not going to. I refuse!
