I was a close 2nd, the person they're taking has testing and recent development experience and other experience and they feel it will be easier for them to pick up the CCTV element than it will be for me to pick up the stuff that I'm "missing". They will be probably hiring again in the not-too-distant future for another person so will keep my eyes open.

My action plan for now then, is:
  1. Try to get some development done. Something. Anything. Maybe look at some open-source project to start looking at minor bugs. Something I use and appreciate. Maybe try once again to start a project of my own.
  2. Talk to development people at work. Ask them if they can explain x, y and z to me. Ask if I can get read access to look at source to become familiar with how the internals work properly.
  3. Ask about spending some time with the validation people to see what they can show me.
  4. Read up on some of the things I was asked about but didn't know, including comb filters, transforms (fast/fourier), CSCD networking, video encoding.
A good start.
