I was a close 2nd, the person they're taking has testing and recent development experience and other experience and they feel it will be easier for them to pick up the CCTV element than it will be for me to pick up the stuff that I'm "missing". They will be probably hiring again in the not-too-distant future for another person so will keep my eyes open.

My action plan for now then, is:
  1. Try to get some development done. Something. Anything. Maybe look at some open-source project to start looking at minor bugs. Something I use and appreciate. Maybe try once again to start a project of my own.
  2. Talk to development people at work. Ask them if they can explain x, y and z to me. Ask if I can get read access to look at source to become familiar with how the internals work properly.
  3. Ask about spending some time with the validation people to see what they can show me.
  4. Read up on some of the things I was asked about but didn't know, including comb filters, transforms (fast/fourier), CSCD networking, video encoding.
A good start.

That's rough - I'm sorry - better luck next time!

Thanks! Hopefully next time I'll be able to beat the other hopefuls up before they come in the door - that'll give me the edge ;)

Ah, shame!

Something good must be around the corner :-)

What I've got now isn't "something bad", it's just "something the same"! :) I'm keeping my hopes up that something "different", "good", "within my skill set" and "within my needed pay range" will com up sometime.

*nods*

I've apparently just landed one of those after searching a fair while - I'm sure it's your turn next :-)

Oh and give your lovely lady a big hug from me :-)

If you were a close 2nd, and they're looking to hire again soon, it looks to me like you've got an excellent chance for next time :-) And Go You for coming up with a plan of action to get you the job you want!!

I could do with borrowing your attitude in order to pull myself together and find a new job, instead of just moping at home on SSP!! Of course, it would help if I actually knew What I Want To Be When I Grow Up...

*smiles* Thanks. I actually have to put a plan into action for it to have been any use, mind!

I have the same "what do I want to do" dilemma, really. I'm chielfy after this job because it gets me out the customer firing line, no longer would I be on the phones. Ya know, I think 5 years is penance enough.

So I'm scouring the local jobsite.co.uk listings and throwing an application at anything I consider to be close enough and enouh money to be a good risk. I don't care whether I have a hope in hell of getting it, there' always a chance that a well written covering letter will catch someone's eye. Not literally. Really, I don't use staples and explosives or anything like that.

Well, I certainly know all about making grand plans and never actually carrying them out, but at the moment I seem to be lacking so much a plan, never mind the gumption to follow it through :-(

I'm now scouring about a dozen job websites every day, including jobsite.co.uk reed.co.uk charitysectorjobs.com totaljobs.com jobs.thirdsector.co.uk jobs.scot.nhs.uk s1jobs.com

So far I've not exactly come up with a lot though - all the work seems to be in Aberdeen or Inverness, neither of which are even remotely commutable from here :-(

*snorts* That actually had me properly LOLing :-) Thank you!! Maybe I should see what I can rig up for my next application letter!!

Have you been sending speculative letters/applications to any local companies? Might be worthwhile if you're struggling to find anything through other means.

*hugs* I was going to call last night until I realised that it was gone 10pm. I'll set something to prod me tonight and maybe give you a ring later - as long as you're not likely to be busy!
