I don't know who to demonise today. My choice comes down to the Fire Brigades Union or the employers of said firefighters, presumably local councils? Which one is being the idiot here? Surely one of them is.

On one side, we have the unrealistic demands of a 40% (I believe this is an accurate figure?) payrise from the FBU. This is quite frankly, laughable. Admittedly, everything suggests that they are underpaid for the job they do, but that level of payrise is not going to happen - even in a perfect world. I could understand 20%, a fifth. It's reasonable. It's possible. It's the kind of thing that local councils might consider.

On the other side, you have the employers. These are the people who did nothing for months, who have allowed the situation to escalate to this current level. These are the folk who made an 11% offer today, a day before the strike.

Which side to hate? After all, we have to hate one.

i think they would probably accept 20% (the firemen that is) but the government has told the authorities not to offer 16 (i.e. to keep it below 16)

we don't always have to hate someone. except perhaps bill gates.
