I believe the Slater accent is a homage to(or a rip on, depending on your opinion of both of the parties involved) Jack Nicholson.

That would indeed make sense. Thank you for that nugget of info which shall be stored away and dragged out in 20 years time - when I'm lying asleep in bed I shall probably suddenly wake up and shout "Slater was imitating De Niro!!!"

Or maybe not.
