This test sucks. It won't accept there are people outside of the US. What the hell is a valid US postcode anyway? Why should I know or care?

Valid US zipcodes (postal codes) are 5 digit numbers. Take me, 11510. The first digit indicates a group of states. 1 means New York, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Next 2 narrow down the district: 15, Nassau County south. And the last 2, the place, Baldwin (they tend to be assigned alphabetically: 11520 is Freeport, 11572 Oceanside, 11598 Woodmere.) Size-wise they equate to the first part of a UK postcode, more or less. There's a 4-digit extension ("ZIP+4") which narrows it down to a group of buildings or even less, much like the 2nd part of a UK post code.

Examples: NY 10001, LA 90001, Boston 02101, Miami 33101, Atlanta 30301, Chicago 60601, DC 20001, Seattle 98101. (Those are city centres--so Hollywood is 90028, midtown Manhattan 10016, etc).

Should you care? Beyond needing to know that it has to be 5 digits in case you need to send mail to the USA....

Cheers for that. :) I think it works very similarly in Germany, actually. I just really object to having to know that kind of thing to take part in a silly test, cos if I do it it has to be fake anyway, so where's the value in collecting it?! *blows a raspberry*

I agree in principle and this is why I never did it before. However, it doesn't actually matter what ZIP you put in if you choose the "don't care about distance" option.

I think Alexis' explanation is way better than any I could give, I just put in 23455 (Virginia Beach, Virginia - IIRC). You could always stick in 90210 :)
