Well.
I got a phone call before I left work on Thursday night saying "Hi, it's Alan Ewing here from your estate agency - I don't want to panic you, but can you call me on .....".

Oh shit!
What the HELL are you supposed to do when someone leaves you a message like that. I assumed my flat had burnt down or something stupid. It's not quite as bad, but still a major pain in the ass.

I'm being booted out, given notice, evicted. OK - evicted is a bit strong :) The owners of the flat I let have decided that they want to sell. Hence, I can no longer let the flat. I have been given 2 months notice.

CRAP.

I should qualify that last statement with some reasoning :)
As many of you may remember, I am looking to move south. I had decided about a month ago that I was heading away in about 6 months after I'd learnt the ropes and gotten some kind of name for myself within the department.

The reason that I'm so annoyed? Simple. This screws up my plans. If I give my 2mths notice now, I then have to find somewhere else here. In Scotland, short term lets tend to be for 6mths minimum. This means 2mths more here, 6mths more in another place - 3 mths more than expected.

The alternative of course, is to move when my lease ends. This means things happening with me having very little time to plan.

Which is best?
I welcome any advice that anyone may have.

I'd go in 2 months. If it's what you want to do anyhow, why wait?

My advice would be to talk to your line manager/TL/whatever the hell you call them. Outline the situation - say you had plans to move south anyway eventually (frex because your gf lives down here ;) and had hoped for a transfer, but now the flat yaddayadda. See if there's any chance they'd accept you down here with the experience you'll have when the flat lease ends. If yes, move (and obviously we can help organise things this end). If not, find another place there. Third option, find another job and move here anyway. Also check with the agency you rent with, see if they have any really short term lets - in Edinburgh I know for sure they did 3-month lets for professionals.

Never put off till tomorrow what you could do today.

I say go in 2 months! Live on the edge!

I think I'l go with the others here. Talk to your supervisor and see what s/he can do given the living situation

Move ASAP, but only if you have a job where you're relocating to. With 8 weeks to go, and assuming 28 days' notice at your current job, that means getting a new job offer and handing in your notice 3-4 weeks from now.

The schedule's tight for the above!

Alternatively, if your employer (I'm thinking holding company or head office) has a location and vacancy further South, then you're not under such time pressures, as a relocation could happen internally at shorter notice. However, you might find yourself at weeks 3 and 4 needing the contingency of a move to another employer entirely (especially if due process at your existing employer takes a long time), as by that point, you'll have to be looking for a new contract on another flat.
