She bought Dungeon Keeper 2 and I've been spending time trying to make it work properly on XP, as it's really designed for Windows 98 and has a tendency to crash on some sound related events.

Just to make sure it worked, mind you... just to make sure... I've been playing for about 3hrs now. I think that's a pretty good stress test.

Damnit she's got me addicted *G*

Yes, I've had this problem, and tried all the published fixes. There's a geeks' tool, Microsoft Compatibility Tool, which makes some patches to known programs, (in response to industry-wide SP2 compatibiity issues, I suspect), where DK2 is listed.

I ended up unintalling it, as it crashed eventually in all situatons, and couldn't cope with multiplayer for more than 10 minutes. Shame, as despite its age, it's a really good game.

Aye, I installed the compatibility thingie and it made very little difference when runing with the various compatibility modes on.

Then I uninstalled it after breaking it completely, reinstalled it and it seems to be working. Sound's a bit crackly but it at least hasn't crashed out on me yet. Hurrah!

A creature has died in your dungeon and left all their cats to you in it's will.

That sounds like DirectX swapping out textures over AGP (this would cause sound to be choppy), but why it would want to do that, given the system requirements, I don't know. Try setting the texture detail to low, and installing all the patches for the game.

A lost soul has entered your dungeon...
...oh! - it's wandered out again.
