Now we're using MySQL as a backend, instead of the Berkley DB. I honestly don't know if it'll make any difference but I've been running the MySQL daemon on this machine for months now and never made any use of it other than Gallery2, so thought I should do something with it :)

What else can I do with MySQL that's useful?

As my involvement with DBs basically involves knowing what they are, and ultra-basic SQL, my understanding of the Oracle/MySQL religious war is limited to the fact that it exists.

Why so much bitterness betwixt the two camps? :)

No bitterness, but Oracle is much more powerful in pretty much every way. I mean, it was only recently that MySQL got any form of transaction support, and that is a pretty basic feature.
