Don't try to install Microsoft IE 7 Beta 1 on your PC. For it is a righteous pain in the arse to remove if it doesn't wanna go. "You must be logged in as the same user that installed it", when I was. Hmm. Never mind the fact that the installation didn't go through properly in the first place and left a bastardised non-functional internet explorer, but enough of it in place to ensure I couldn't re-install an old version (you have a newer version in place)!

Argh :)

Now now, no religious wars in this journal!
And besides, I already use Firefox as my primary browser, I just wanted to see how well it worked. And the answer: Not at all :)

I wasn't leading to any religious wars, honest :o) I've stated that elsewhere, and once only. I'm sensible like that :o)

As I write, I have a Mac whirring away to my right, and I have Firefox downloading a trial version of Delphi 2005. I think that demonstrates that I'm always 'alternative seeking'...

Whereas I'm an MS-whore ;)
Actually, I use an awful lot of 'alternative' software, but often it has bigger problems than the proprietary equivalent that they're supposed to replace (or complement) that it's not actually worth using, even on principle.

But that means paying at least half the price again for the kit, then even more for the software. Whilst it's a nice principle, Macs don't hold any appeal for me at this (poor) moment.

heh. understood.MACs aren't for everyone (and they certainly aren't for anyone's wallet).... but I sure do love mine. it may take me ten years to pay it off, during which time I would have had to buy another or upgrade... add another ten years... and well, you get the idea.

Not running Windows XP? Surely a system restore point should fix this mess?

You'd think... tried that :-z Not quite sure what it did but it screwed up something big style.

I did figure it out thanks to a bit of patience with google. There's a line in the '.inf' file labeled [PreRequisites] which you can delete to resolve the whole "You must be logged on as the same user" error thingie.
