There are various things about iTunes that I detest, so I can tell that this relationship is going to be love-hate, at best. More likely it's going to be hate-hate. The existance of it, for a start, drives me into paroxysms of loathing.

See, I've got all my MP3s arranged on my hard disk the way I like them - some separate artist folders, some separate genre folders, some random folders ("remix", "dub", "Seth_Lakeman", "single_mp3s" as examples). And all I want is to be able to take a folder, throw it at the iPod/iTunes and say "here - take these and arrange them in the same way they are on my disk". But no - you can't DO that, apparently. You have to go through iTunes' absolutely pathetic method of organising them by tag.

Do you have any idea how hard this is to do when you've never bothered with ID3 tags before, because all your MP3s are properly named? It's very hard. I have downloaded a program to mass edit ID3 tags, which should help, but damnit why can't these things just work the way I want them to?

Looks neat, does everything the other thing I downloaded does and one more - strips out underscores :) (I used my music collection on a linux box, so it became necessary to remove the spaces from filenames else life got very complicated)

Or tell iTunes NOT to organize your music library. It can do that. preferences > advanced > general.

I've already told iTunes not to copy my music to the folder specified, so that option should have no effect. There would be no point having 2 copies of the files on disk.
