And found 'The Great Big British Quiz' again, this time on Channel 199. I had a shot on the website and got through first time! Then got selected to be on air first time. I hadn't even looked at the puzzle - didn't expect to get through! Think I might even have given the same answer as last time, though can't remember. Oops.
I looked at it, and realised suddenly that it was the same puzzle I was talking about in this post here. So that's 9 days later, and they've still got the same puzzle going. 9 days, and they're on about 16 hours a day. Taking... I don't know... at the moment they've got about a caller a minute on, and that's just the ones that get through. At a pound a call - assuming 1 in 20 get on air (probably grossly overestimating, probably a lower ratio people get through to the studio), that's £20 a minute, £1200 an hour.
In the course of this puzzle - 144 hours, that's £172,800. The prize is £30,000.
Even assuming that they get half the cost of the phone call from the telcos, they are really raking it in.
Reproduced exactly as it is on screen. Apparently there's one right answer, though I can find at least 25 different ways of calculating AN answer.
[Edit... I should have been writing down wrong answers when I first started watching, but surely that's just obsessive and stupid? Anyhow... I have been now, and my there are some very odd people calling in with some very weird answers.]

TWENTY-FIVE DIVIDED BY FIVE =
1 + 2 + 3 x 4 =
12 x 0 =
101 - 99 =

25 / 5 = 5
1 + 2 + 3 * 4 = (bodmas says do the multiplication before the addition) = 15
12 * 0 = 0
101 - 99 = 2
then add up the numbers in the whole script so
first line contains 25 + 5 + 5 = 35
next line contains 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 15 = 25 from this line or 60 so far
next line contains 12 + 0 + 0 = 12 from this line or 72 so far.
next line contains 101 + 99 + 2 = 202 this line added to the 72 gives 274

It's that infuriating vagueness again :)
Also - TWENTY-FIVE... does that mean 25, Twenty MINUS Five?

Oh for heaven's sake! Do what it says add the numbers!:
1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 12 + 0 + 101 + 99 = 222

- don't add the words, just the numbers;
- add the digits
- include the "-" as a negative operator to the "99"
- Add the numbers! Is "!" a factorial?
Then there are weird things like
- "TWENTY-FIVE" = 15
...and all other interpretations, including strict BODMAS.
Basically, it's a very ambigious statement, interpreted in a twisted way, designed to extract cash from people.
