We walked into the Dreams store in Chester after having been into several others nearby, and we were accosted by the salesman almost immediately. Jane said "I don't like him" and I agreed. He showed us 3 beds which we liked, and I asked him to show us something cheaper (so that we could compare whether we wanted to go down in price or if the ones he was showing us were overpriced). He didn't look at all impressed and showed us something which was OK but a load less comfy.
We went back to our favourite and had another go on it, then the sales patter started. I told him we could talk about things but I wasn't going to commit today. Seemed to pay no attention to this at all and told us we could have the display model at a reduced price. The price he gave us was good compared to the displayed prices on everything but we weren't sure still, having seen cheaper beds in other stores.
He got quite agreesive at this point, and pouted like a little boy when I told him that we still weren't going to commit. He called over the store manager and told him that he'd offered us x on this product and that us having to think about it was ridiculous. The store manager obviously agreed and also started agressively selling, using every technique to overcome objections that I know about and a few pushy techniques that just aren't fair. It was only after about 5 minutes of verbal pummeling that I had enough and said no very firmly and just about ended up pulling Jane away from the circling sharks.
I'd consider complaining but I think the regional sales manager would only congratulate their staff for a job well done :(

I am disappointed, because actually the bed we were looking at I quite fancied and given even an hour or two to sort our money out we may very well have bought it, especially at the price they were offering us!
Ahh well, a letter drafting may be coming up.

I suspect some people's jobs are on the line. Now we're in credit crunch land, they are probably desperately short of serious customers...

I said as loudly as I could on the way out that I wasn't going to bow to that kind of pressure and that it was our money, and we choose who to give it to and refuse to be bullied by "sales" staff.

I'd write a really stinky letter!

I think on reflection there shall be a letter sent. I really was tempted until the really hard sell started but now they have no chance of me spending a few hundred quid there.
