The last 24 hours of my twitterings and tweetings.

  • 09:19 Car booked in for friday, hoped someone would at least look at it today but no luck. #
  • 17:45 External HDD appears to have dead. Damnit, damnit why? #
  • 20:21 Looks like it's Windows that is stuffed - HDD works fine Ubuntu - it doesn't even blink when I plug it in. Windows has a hissy fit... #

HDD: Might be the power supply, rather than the drive itself. Switch on: if it makes tiny clicks, then the 12V line is knackered on the PSU, and you should be able to get a replacement under warranty. If it's all dead, then try plugging the bare drive into your IDE/SATA on another puter.

Oops - didn't read your point 3.
Dear me, I could save so much time by reading everything first... Tsk! :o)

Right, I've read everything.
Try plugging the drive into a different USB port. Often, this makes the puter think it's a different device, and tries again.

heheh, I think it's something to do with the drive. I tried it in various USB ports (gotta love Windows thinking a different USB port=different device) and tried a freeware recovery tool (http://www.cgsecurity.org/) which reports a problem with the backup master file table and seems unable to fix it.

Ahh well, it just gives me more of a push towards Ubuntu for now until I can sort it properly! :)
