This was a first for me. The Grove Park Theatre is a small and I'm guessing early 20th century purpose built theatre (~170 seats), and a refreshing change from the school assembly hall that serves as Oswestry Musical Theatre Society (OMTC's) performing space. It's small, intimate, and looks well maintained from the audience's point of view.

The cast was variable. The characters playing the leads were all good - Seymour, Audrey, Mushnik, and Orin the dentist all impressed with their performances. The supporting cast, namely two of Crystal, Ronnette and Chiffon were not as good as I would have expected them to be, considering the important part they play in the show. Their role is spread through right from opening the show to closing the show and is vital in adding depth to the music, and in storytelling. The third was awesome, however and carried the other two. It's not that they were bad - they just weren't as good as they should have been for the part.

The only negative comment I had to make on any of the leads' performance, was that Audrey's "Somewhere That's Green" was dynamically wrong. She started off strong, leaving her nowhere to go when she got to what should have been the climax.

There were a few very noticeable technical problems with both lighting (follow spots in the wrong place, on and off at the wrong time, the set looked like a disco at some points) and sound (microphones not being turned up at the right time), which considering this was the 5th night of the run, somewhat confused me. If that was 5th night, what was the rest of the week like?

However - given all of the negative comments, the show was ultimately completely enjoyable. The acting was good all round, the key songs sounded like they should, the storyline familiar and the (presumably hired) plant awesome! I applaud them for putting on a show as good as it was with 6 weeks rehearsal. I wish OMTC could manage the same thing with the resources that we have at our disposal.
