OK, I know some German - I studied it for a yr or so at A-Level and found it so incredibly dull and boring that I quit, I was't any good at it anyhow, and I wanted to concentrate on other stuff.

I stuck this into Babelfish... (taken from http://www.livejournal.com/talkread.bml?journal=calliste&itemid=476933)

"Ich frag mich aber wieso. Scheint doch alles teurer geworden zu sein? Ich habe letztes WE einfach mal so 50 ausgegeben. Das hätte ich mir zweimal überlegt, wenn's DM gewesen wären. Seltsam."

And got this back...

I don't know which makes more sense?

So anyway what she said was this (loosely translated -- so it doesn't sound stilted):

"But I ask myself why. Doesn't it just seem like everything has become so expensive? Last weekend I dropped 50 Euros in one place! I would have reconsidered that when we were using Deutschmarks. It's weird."

*grins* I got the loose idea after looking at it for a while and digging out my German/English dictionary. It was just that the translation was so absolutely awful, I had to mention it!

Thank you for a reasonable translation though :) How do you know that horribly complex language? :)

a) I took German for three years in high school

b) I took Attic Greek for three semesters in university (same grammatical structure, believe it or not)

c) I was a Linguistics major and translation is my glory (don't get me started)

d) I'm half German -- it's in the blood ;)
