from October the 1st, the US is refusing visa-waivers to anyone without one [machine readable passport]. You have to get a normal visa. Male visa applicants aged between 16-45 also have to fill in this new extra form

What?
So, I am male, I am 16-45, I _obviously_ require closer supervision and for the US Govt to garner yet more information about me, in order to track my movements and make me a better person, probably by trying to convert me to Christianity.

I know it's not going to have any effect on me. I realise this. It's just foul and ridiculous and stupid and moronic and idiotic and well - grah!

The more I read, the more scared I get.

Yeah, but all "red" EU passports are machine readable so what's the problem??

They scan your passport through when you arrive at immigration - I guess if you dont have that electronic data it is harder to check your passport isn't forged or stolen.

Or am I missing the point here?

I realise that my, and all EU passports, already have machine readable strips. My point, I guess, is that they're being ridiculous with the amount of, whass the word? Discrimiation is the only word I can think of... why only males? Why only from certain countries?

AIUI, you only have to fill out the new form if you are filing for a visa. If you qualify for VWP you don't have to bother.

Personally, I think it's a ridiculous amount of information (I looked at the form).

Weren't you one of the people I had a discussion over biometric passports with?

Yes, and I don't think they are such a bad idea still. However, this is completely different. This is applying a rule in a very discriminatory fashion. If it were to everyone, fine. If it were to everyone without a machine readable passport, fine. I can see the reasoning for it.

But applying the rules to males only, of a certain age?
Why? It makes no sense.
