So, after having destroyed yet another partition (I promise it was only kinda my fault but not really?) we're back to mainly booting Ubuntu Hardy Heron. Right now the only thing I want to go back to WIndows for is ripping DVDs - if anyone out there can recommend a DVD43/AnyDVD like program for Linux, please let me know. (If you're not sure what they do, they intercept data to/from the DVD drive and strip off any deliberately introduced errors, region encoding or copy protection).

It was kinda my fault. I was resizing a partition using Partition Magic and left it going overnight. In the morning I turned on the PC and it did nothing except access the hard drive lots. Left it for 15+ mins and nothing changed. I powered it down (yes I know) and it wouldn't boot up again. Yay for the rescue DVD and not having screwed with the rescue partition!

So I've been fiddling around with stuff and have the basic services set up again - X, WiFi, SSH and VNC over SSH being the two key ones. Mail I ain't arsed about as it's all Googlified these days and it's easier to do it that way than set up Squirrelmail/fetchmail/IMAPd or equivalent combination again.

Wireless was a RIGHT pain in the arse. Atheros AR5007 chipsets don't play nicely with Linux. Even more frustrating is when you get it working, then for no good reason it stops. Grrr. Discovering Wicd saved the PC from being thrown out the window.

Oooh I didn't know the wireless dropping off was a known wireless prob on linux. It kept disappearing on me and I kept restarting, thinking 'oh this is odd' and then forgetting about it again. :O)

It's not a problem with Linux (or Ubuntu) in general, it's specific to the drivers I was using or the hardware. It's a problem as it's not a well-supported chipset.

However, if you are using a Gnome-based linux distro, try Wicd as it was the saviour of my wireless connections :)
