Oooh I didn't know the wireless dropping off was a known wireless prob on linux. It kept disappearing on me and I kept restarting, thinking 'oh this is odd' and then forgetting about it again. :O)

It's not a problem with Linux (or Ubuntu) in general, it's specific to the drivers I was using or the hardware. It's a problem as it's not a well-supported chipset.

However, if you are using a Gnome-based linux distro, try Wicd as it was the saviour of my wireless connections :)
